Circulate Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"definition\">\n<p class=\"full\">In general, all Circulates have each dancer move forward along a defined path (called the &#8220;circulate path&#8221;) to the next dancer position. The definitions below will refer to the following diagrams.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2064\" src=\"https:\/\/definition.nanninga.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/firefox_2019-09-06_08-23-05.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"170\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2065\" src=\"https:\/\/definition.nanninga.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/firefox_2019-09-06_08-23-27.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"194\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2066\" src=\"https:\/\/definition.nanninga.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/firefox_2019-09-06_08-23-44.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"full\">\n<p>No call in the Circulate Family can be used with the Ocean Wave Rule or the Facing Couples Rule (see &#8220;Part 1: General: Conventions and Rule&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Fractions are proper and occasionally used with calls in the Circulate family. See &#8220;Part 4: Additional Detail: Fractions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The timing for all Circulates is 4, but if the Circulate has the effect of a Pass Thru, the timing is 2.<\/p>\n<p>The various types of Circulates and various ways to name them are described in detail in the following sections.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21a. (Named Dancers) Circulate<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\"><b>Starting formations<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\">General Lines (e.g., Ocean Waves, Two-Faced Lines), General Columns<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"command-examples\">\n<p><b>Command examples<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Centers (or Ends) Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Girls (or Boys) Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Everyone Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Circulate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\">\n<p><b>Dance action<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Designated dancers move forward to the next dancer position, following their General Lines or General Column circulate path.<\/p>\n<p>A dancer looking out of the formation walks in a 180-degree arc and finishes in the next position on the other side, looking in. Others walk forward one dancer position.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ending-formation\"><b>Ending formations<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"ending-formation\">General Lines, General Columns<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\"><b>Styling<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\">Arms should be held in natural dance position and ready to assume appropriate position for the next call<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"comments\">\n<p><b>Comments<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The call &#8220;(Named Dancers) Circulate&#8221; is usually used from General Lines.<\/p>\n<p>When all dancers are active (e.g., Everyone Circulate), the comments in All 8 Circulate also apply.<\/p>\n<p>Circulate is the same as Everyone Circulate, unless it is clear from the previous call that only certain dancers are active (e.g., Dive Thru, Centers Touch 1\/4 and Circulate).<\/p>\n<p>Not all dancers on a given circulate path need to go in the same direction. Dancers going in opposite directions along the same path will pass right shoulders. (See &#8220;Part 1: General: Conventions and Rules: Passing Rule&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>(Named Dancers) Circulate is sometimes used more generally with unusual formations. Each dancer walks forward in a smooth path to the next dancer position. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ocean Waves: Split Circulate 1 1\/2, Center Wave Swing Thru, Others Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Two-Faced Lines: Centers Hinge, Outside 6 Circulate, Centers Hinge<\/li>\n<li>Columns: Circulate 1 1\/2, Center 6 Circulate 1 1\/2, Center 4 Walk And Dodge, Others Bend The Line<\/li>\n<li>Facing Lines: Outsides Touch 1\/4, Centers Pass the Ocean, Outside 6 Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Tidal Wave: Center 4 Hinge, Same Ones Circulate (or use Box Circulate)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is improper for (Named Dancers) Circulate to cause a circulating dancer to end on the same spot as an inactive dancer, e.g., from Columns, Ends Circulate. From Columns, &#8220;Centers Circulate&#8221; is only proper if the caller makes it clear that the dancers must stay in the center, e.g., &#8220;Boys work in the center and Circulate&#8221;. Box Circulate could instead be used, e.g., \u201cCenters Box Circulate\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21b. Couples Circulate<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\"><b>Starting formation<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\">Two-Faced Lines<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"command-examples\"><b>Command example<\/b><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"command-examples\">Couples Circulate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\"><b>Dance action<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\">Each couple works as a unit to move forward to the next position, following the General Box circulate path (see above). Couples traveling the shorter distance should adjust with shorter steps to coincide with those traveling the longer distance. Those traveling the longer distance should not rush. Arms should be held in natural dance position and ready to assume appropriate position for the next call.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21c. All 8 Circulate<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\"><b>Starting formations<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\">General Lines (e.g., Ocean Waves, Two-Faced Lines), General Columns<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"command-examples\"><b>Command example<\/b><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"command-examples\">All 8 Circulate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Dance action<\/b><\/div>\n<div>All dancers Circulate.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"full\">\n<div class=\"ending-formation\"><b>Ending formations<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"ending-formation\">General Lines, General Columns. Same as starting formation from Ocean Waves, Two-Faced Lines, and Columns.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\"><b>Styling<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\">Same as for (Named Dancers) Circulate<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"comments\">\n<p><b>Comments<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It is improper to teach that All 8 Circulate always means &#8220;ends stay ends and centers stay centers&#8221;. This statement is true from Ocean Waves and Two-Faced Lines, but not from Columns.<\/p>\n<p>From Two-Faced Lines, Couples Circulate is a more common way to call All 8 Circulate. From Columns, Single File Circulate is the same as All 8 Circulate.<\/p>\n<p>When dancers go in opposite directions along the same path, All 8 Circulate is often equivalent to other calls (e.g., Pass Thru or Trade By). These applications are proper, but confusing to many dancers. Except in an instructional setting, they are often perceived as attempts to trick the dancers and should probably be avoided. On the other hand, All 8 Circulate from Three And One Lines is acceptable, though still difficult and uncommon at Mainstream.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21d. Single File Circulate<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\"><b>Starting formation<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\">Columns Only<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"command-examples\">\n<p><b>Command examples<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Column Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Single File Circulate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\"><b>Dance action<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\">All dancers Circulate<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ending-formation\"><b>Ending formation<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"ending-formation\">Columns<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\"><b>Styling<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\">Same as for (Named Dancers) Circulate (#21a).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21e. Box \/ Split Circulate<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Box Circulate and Split Circulate, while similar, are covered in two separate cases.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21e &#8211; Case 1: Box Circulate<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\"><b>Starting formation<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\">Box Circulate<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"command-examples\">\n<p><b>Command examples<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heads Touch 1\/4; Heads Box Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Centers Box Circulate<\/li>\n<li>Pass To The Center; Centers Touch 1\/4 and Box Circulate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\"><b>Dance action<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\">Each dancer moves forward to the next position, following the General Box circulate path (see above).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ending-formation\"><b>Ending formation<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"ending-formation\">Box Circulate<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\"><b>Styling<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"styling\">Same as for (Named Dancers) Circulate (#21a).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"comments\">\n<p><b>Comments<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Box Circulate is proper only after specifying a group of four dancers or, rarely, groups of four dancers. For example, one could say &#8220;On each side Box Circulate&#8221; but &#8220;Split Circulate&#8221; would be more common and preferred.<\/p>\n<p>Once dancers in a Box Circulate formation are identified, Box Circulate and Circulate are the same, and many callers will say only &#8220;Circulate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21e &#8211; Case 2 : Split Circulate<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\"><b>Starting formations<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"starting-formations\">General Lines (e.g., Ocean Waves), General Columns<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"command-examples\"><b>Command example<\/b><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"command-examples\">Split Circulate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\"><b>Dance action<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"dance-action\">\n<p>Divide (&#8220;split&#8221;) the formation in half. Dancers in each half move forward to the next position, following the General Box circulate path (see above). The Question is: Does the application comply with the written CALLERLAB Basic Definition?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">A: The Answer is NO, it does not meet the Basic definition; however, it would be proper at C-1 and beyond as it complies with the Challenge definition for 16 matrix. The ending formation would be Ocean Waves far apart and the right hand rule would apply to this application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; color: red;\">(November 2000) <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">Q: Would it be acceptable to call &#8220;Split Circulate&#8221; from a double pass thru formation? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">A: No. Although this may be technically proper, it should not be used as an extension of split circulate as it introduces dancer confusion and bad body flow. The Committee believes it would be bad judgment to expose our dancers to this type usage of calls. We do not want square dancing to evolve in this direction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #ff0000;\">(April 2002) <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">Q: Is it proper to call &#8220;Circulate&#8221; from a Tidal Wave? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">A: No. This call does not comply with the definition as there is not a clear circulate path. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; color: red;\">(July 2011) <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">Q: From a double pass thru formation, the caller called \u201cAll Eight Circulate Twice\u201d expecting the dancers to stay within their columns, go straight ahead and end in a completed double pass thru. Is this correct? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">A: The committee determined this does not comply with the circulate definition. After the first Circulate, the dancers would have been in parallel waves therefore, another circulate would end in parallel waves. The caller should have simply called Double Pass Thru. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma',sans-serif; color: red;\">(July 2011) <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">Q: From Two Faced Lines, the call was \u201cAll Eight Split Circulate Double\u201d. The caller expected the leaders to Partner Trade and then Pass Thru and the trailers to Pass Thru and the Partner Trade. Is this correct? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\">A: No as this does NOT comply with the CALLERLAB Basic Identification and is therefore improper.
